What is a Daily Money Manager? And How is it Different From a Bookkeeper?

If you've never heard the term "daily money manager" before, you're not alone — it's a newer profession, but the need it fills isn't new at all. The American Association of Daily Money Managers defines a Daily Money Manager (DMM) as a financial professional who manages personal day-to-day money matters: bills, budgets, recordkeeping, and the paperwork that piles up between visits to a CPA or financial advisor.

A helpful comparison: a bookkeeper tracks a business's transactions for accounting and tax purposes — categorizing expenses, reconciling business accounts, preparing reports a CPA can use. A daily money manager does something similar, but for a person's or family's everyday life rather than a company's books.

In practice, that can look like:

• Bills paid on time — no more late fees or a lapsed insurance policy from a missed due date

• A second set of eyes on accounts, often the first line of defense against fraud

• Mail and paperwork organized into something you (or your family) can actually make sense of

• More time and less stress, whether you're juggling a career, a business, caregiving, or just prefer not to spend evenings on spreadsheets

• A clear, organized handoff to your CPA, financial advisor, or attorney when their expertise is needed

A DMM isn't a replacement for any of those professionals — it's the steady, ongoing layer that keeps everything organized and current in between, so nothing falls through the cracks and nobody's flying blind when a bigger decision comes up.
