Early warning signs of dementia
Here's something most families don't expect: a missed bill payment could be one of the earliest warning signs of dementia, showing up years before a diagnosis ever does.
How might early-stage cognitive decline impact my daily life
A large study of Medicare beneficiaries found that people who were later diagnosed with dementia were more likely to miss payments on routine bills starting as early as six years before their diagnosis. Their risk of falling into a lower, “subprime” credit tier began climbing about two and a half years out. And the financial strain didn't stop at diagnosis. It continued for several more years afterward.
Am I getting older or is this something else
What makes this especially telling: researchers checked whether the same pattern showed up before other health scares, like a heart attack or a hip fracture. It didn't. Dementia stood alone. That tells us this isn't just “getting older.” It's the disease itself, quietly showing up in the mail before it shows up anywhere else.
Could this be the first signs of Alzheimer's or another dementia
If you've noticed a parent, or yourself, letting bills slide, forgetting an autopay, or handling money differently than before, it's worth paying attention. Not because something's wrong with them, but because it might be one of the first places anything shows up at all.
If I notice changes with my ability to manage my personal finances, who can help
This is exactly the kind of activity Kelli Cassidy & Co supports. We're a second set of eyes on the everyday financial picture, quietly and respectfully monitoring or facilitating bill payments and financial organization long before a small slip becomes a bigger problem. You don't need someone to take over. You just need someone by your side paying attention to make sure your finances are up-to-date, organized and secure.
