How do subscriptions pile up?

When did you last look at every charge on your credit card statement, one line at a time? Most people glance at the total and move on. That is exactly how subscriptions pile up. A streaming service you tried once. A meal kit you cancelled in your head but never in the app. A family plan someone else stopped using months ago.
None of these charges are large on their own. That is the problem. They are small enough to ignore and consistent enough to add up. A fifteen minute review is usually all it takes to find them.

How to find unwanted subscriptions

Start with your last two statements, bank and credit card. Go line by line and write down anything you do not immediately recognize or actively use. Log into each service directly rather than relying on memory, since some trials quietly convert to paid plans once the free period ends. Cancel what you do not need, and set a calendar reminder a few days before any remaining free trial is set to expire, so continuing is a choice you make on purpose rather than something that just happens.

Scrolling signed up for a free trial and forgot to cancel

Many of us are guilty of signing up for a free trial and forgetting to cancel. You can also search for subscriptions in your iPhone or Android. Check for trials you forgot about on your cell phone. Check your cell phone for subscriptions to streaming services (e.g., Netflix & Spotify) and paid Apps (e.g., Headspace & Calm) or paid upgrades to YouTube, etc. iPhone subscriptions are found in your settings. Android subscriptions are found in the Play store app. Press the arrow on the image below to view the Android instructions.

How can I help manage my folk's finances

It helps to repeat this every few months rather than once and forget it. Subscriptions change quietly, prices go up, and new ones sneak in. If you have access, this is worth doing for a parent's accounts too, since forgotten subscriptions are just as common there, and often harder to spot from the outside.

Don't have the time to manage the day-to-day finances?

The payoff is usually more than people expect. Many households find twenty to a hundred dollars a month in charges they had simply stopped noticing. Just as useful, knowing exactly what should be on your statement makes it far easier to spot something that should not be there. If keeping a regular eye on statements sounds like more time than you have, that ongoing review is one of the simplest things a daily money manager takes on.
